The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000 on a bakery after it was found guilty of misleading consumers by selling expired bakery products.

The case was filed by investigation officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) after they discovered strawberry-flavored cream buns bearing an expiry date of April 16, 2026, displayed for sale during a surprise inspection at the establishment.

The CAA subsequently took legal action against the bakery, and when the case was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday (09), the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate subsequently imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000, Ada Derana reporter said.

Authorities have reminded consumers to properly check the manufacturing and expiry dates when purchasing food products.

Consumers have also been requested to inform the CAA of establishments selling expired food products by calling the 1977 hotline during office hours.
