37 shooting incidents reported in Sri Lanka so far this year

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has stated that a total of 37 shooting incidents have been reported in Sri Lanka so far this year, resulting in 18 fatalities.

 

The Minister made these remarks while speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Department of Government Information today (15).

 

He said that, between January 1 and September 10 this year, a total of 867 firearms and other weapons had been taken into police custody. 

 

These included 14 T-56 assault rifles, 31 pistols, 25 revolvers and 797 other firearms, he said.

 

"As of September 14, 2026, a total of 37 shooting incidents have been reported, resulting in 18 fatalities. Meanwhile, from January 1st to September 10th of this year, the police have taken into custody 14 T-56 firearms, 31 pistols, 25 revolvers, and 797 other firearms, bringing the total to 867 firearms.”

 

Meanwhile, a total of 2,404 firearms were taken into police custody in 2025, Minister Jayatissa added.
