Sri Lanka Tourism is looking to tap the considerable potential for further growth in the Middle Eastern market, as the country seeks to strengthen its position as a preferred destination for travellers from the region.
The Middle East has been identified as an important and strategically significant source market for Sri Lanka, with tourism authorities focusing on greater destination visibility, improved accessibility and targeted promotional activity to attract more visitors.
Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the Middle East represented a market with considerable potential for further growth, particularly as Sri Lanka expands efforts to promote its diverse tourism experiences.
“The Middle East continues to be an important and strategically significant source market for Sri Lanka Tourism, with considerable potential for further growth,” Hewawasam said.
He said strengthening cooperation with international travel and tourism partners would help enhance Sri Lanka’s accessibility and visibility among travellers from the region and support efforts to position the country as a preferred and competitive destination.
Sri Lanka is seeking to build on the strong recovery recorded in international tourism. The country welcomed more than 2.3 million international tourists last year, marking a 15.1% increase over the previous year, when arrivals stood at just over two million.
With the global tourism market becoming increasingly competitive, Sri Lanka is placing greater emphasis on markets capable of generating sustained visitor growth. The Middle East is seen as particularly significant, providing opportunities to attract travellers interested in the country’s beaches, nature, wildlife, culture, wellness, adventure and heritage.
Tourism authorities are also looking to strengthen destination promotion through closer engagement with travel trade partners, tour operators and other industry stakeholders.
According to the SLTPB, stronger connectivity and collaborative destination promotion can create greater opportunities to attract visitors from the region while showcasing Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, unique experiences and hospitality.
Hewawasam said closer cooperation with international partners would contribute to the sustainable growth of tourism, while encouraging more Middle Eastern travellers to discover Sri Lanka.
The Middle Eastern market therefore presents an opportunity not only to increase visitor numbers, but also to broaden Sri Lanka’s tourism base and generate greater economic benefits across the industry, including accommodation, transport, attractions, restaurants, retail and other tourism-related services.
